Gaming: Commenting on a Baldur’s Gate 3 article

In an article that was posted on Forbes by Erik Kain, he wrote about the critically acclaimed game, Baldur’s Gate 3 that was officially released in August of this year by Larian Studios. He raised a couple of interesting points that I found quite confusing to say the least. He also gave his article a rather ominous title.

Title:

Erik gave his article the following title, “Two Warnings About ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ Review Scores”. The title is straight to the point, and as you read the content of his article, you realise that his title is not clickbait at all. It is honest and insightful about the article. (Kain, 2023)

First point: “There Are No Plans For Expansions”

Erik points out that this is a bad thing due to “high-level adventuring in D&D”. He also states that you are stuck to replaying the game and not being able to move on to new content. (Kain, 2023)

I found it quite perplexing that he would warn you about a lack of any expansions. The biggest problem with modern games is that they release unfinished products that they try to pad with downloadable content and expansions to get more money from buyers. Larian Studios has released a game that is complete on its own. I have more than a hundred hours on my first playthrough, and I still haven’t quite completed the game yet. There is so much content to discover in the game that I honestly do not believe it needs an expansion of any kind. The game is just complete as is.

Second point: “Act III Is A Total Mess”

Erik says the following, “Don’t take my word for it: Gamers are having major issues with the game’s final act. Baldur’s Gate 3 runs great in the first Act and pretty well in Act 2, but Act 3 completely screws the pooch.” He further goes on to explain that bugs and problems effect many players and that there are glaring performance issues during the final act of the game. He also says that he suggests that the game was not ready yet for its release. (Kain, 2023)

I personally think he overdrives the issues experienced in the final act of the game. I have an Intel I3-4170 processor while the minimum stated requirement is an Intel I5 4690. I also have the game stored on a Hard Disk Drive instead of a recommended SSD. I also still have DDR3 RAM which does the job but isn’t optimal. I experienced quite a bit of performance issues during the final act of the game, but it was not unbearable. The big problem for me was loading times. This is however expected with my hardware that is under the minimum recommended to play the game. As for being rushed? I do not think so for a single second. This has been one of the most complete games I have played in the last decade. And to address it further, Larian Studios have been polishing the game since release with bug fixes, balancing, new content and more. All for free. There are also rumours that they plan to flesh out and stretch the final act quite a bit.
